Front Axle Seal

Literally the all-time #1 problem with these machines are the front axle seals. If you've owned one for more than 50 miles you will be familiar with the seeping oil. Don't let it concern you too much, the rate of leakage is very low, you'll probably drive 1000 miles before you lose enough fluid to need to add more. There are several options:

  1. If under warranty, have the dealer replace it

  2. If not under warranty, replace it yourself, takes 45 minutes and its a $10 part.

  3. Let it leak, you may go through several seals, often if you let it leak it will seal itself.

In some rare cases, owners have gone through many seals, the eventual fix was to replace the differential itself. This may indicate a malformed lip in the casing where the seal is seated. Some early models had an issue where the lips of the seal got folded over in the factory, the seal design has since been updated to help prevent this.

Another common cause of leakage has been identified as a plugged vent tube. Remove the vent tube and blow through it and also check the nipple on the diff to make sure it is clean and clear of debris.

How to replace the seal:

Watch the video below for instructions. The replacement seal you need is a 91254-HL4-F42 that is the part # for the new updated design seal. It uses the same seal on either side.
